Amber Brayer Religion 1030 Dr. R. Barry Matlock 21 November 2017 An Ongoing Discussion Throughout this semester, we have learned a lot about the various elements of religion and the different methods for studying them. After the first couple weeks of this class, we were able to define religion but also analyze the challenges of this task, and relate (the study of) religion to contemporary social and political concerns. After watching the film Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial by Hux Arln , I have grasped a better understanding of how religion can relate to our society as a whole. In class, we have discussed the relations between church and state, and religion and society. One of the very first things we did as a class was define religion as a term that can be accepted in society and the problem of avoiding extension. In class, we discussed religion and how it can be split up into functional (what religion does) vs substantive (what religion is) and this brings about the topic of if religion is in decline. According to the film, it discusses more on the controversy between science and religion. That is, it mentions science is a constant growing topic and things are always changing. Therefore, in relation to classroom discussion, humans might be outgrowing the religious need, in the film referred to as Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Although, another side of the film states that religion is still very important and it is also changing rather than declining, which is referred to as Intelligent design.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
