Amber Brayer Homework #1 Professor Obringer 9 September 2017 HOMEWORK #1 1. Describe the following parts of the cell and functions: a. lysosome - Description: Located in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, and can be viewed as digestive organelles in the cell, are small, membrane-bound sacs filled with hydrolytic enzymes. They are also repositories where cells accumulate abnormal substances that cannot be completely digested or broken down. - Function: They break down excess and worn-out cell parts as well as foreign substances that are taken into the cell. It also can engulf large extracellular particles such as bacteria, cell debris, and other foreign particles by phagocytosis. b. Phospholipid bilayer - Description: Consist primarily of phospholipids, cholesterol, and glycoproteins. It provides the basic fluid structure of the membrane and serves as a relatively impermeable barrier to all but lipid-soluble substances. Aligned with their hydrophilic head facing outwards on each side of the membrane, and their hydrophobic tails projected towards the middle of the membrane. - Function: Provides the basic structure of the cell membrane, and a barrier around the cell and only allows in certain molecules. Integral proteins span the lipid bilayer, and most of the integral proteins pass directly through the membrane and form the ion channels. It also contains other proteins such as peripheral proteins which can serve as receptors or are involved in intracellular signaling systems.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
