Chapter 4: Part 2, Reading Treaty of Paris Signed Feb 1763 Treaty gave Spain control over the vast Louisiana Territory, which left france with no territory on the North American continent. Managing a new empire During and after war, british government increased taxes. In 1763 british paid 26 times as much as the average americans paid. Pontiac’s Rebellion Indians fought back in spring 1763, capturing more of British forts around Great Lakes and in the Ohio Valley. Also raided Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia Became to be called this because of the prominent role played by the Ottawa chieftain who sought to unify several tribes in the effort to stop american expansion. The Proclamation Line Treaty of Easton 1758 agreement with the Delawares and Shawnees King George ii issued Royal Proclamation of 1763 which drew imaginary line across crest of Appalachian mountains. Ended the activities of speculators buying huge tracts of Indian land. Grenville's colonial policy Called for least taxed people in the world must pay for the soldiers defending them Tighten enforcement of the Navigation act and send warships to capture American smugglers. The Sugar Act To generate more money Grenville put through the American Revenue Act of 1764 (Sugar Act) Cut the tax on molasses in half but added new taxes on sugar, wines, coffee and spices. Raise revenues and not merely regular trade with other nations The Stamp Act 1765 Grenville persuaded parliament to pass Quartering act which required Americans to fed and house British troops. Feb 13, 1765 Parliament passed Stamp Act which required colonist to purchase stamped paper for virtually every possible use including newspapers, pamphlets, bonds, lease, deeds, etc. Was to go into effect Nov 1 First effort to place a tax directly on American goods and services. The nonimportation movement Patriots signed what were called nonimportation agreements pledging not to buy or consume any british goods. 1760-1770 united whigs and enabled women to play a significant role in resisting Britain's colonial policies. Calling themselves Daughter of Liberty. Colonial Unity

Delegates insisted they would accept no taxes being imposed on them without their own consent, given personally or by their representatives. Repeal of the Stamp Act Grenville replaced with Lord Rockingham in July 1765 Feb 1766 Parliament repealed it. To save face, parliament passes the Declaration Act, which asserted its power to govern the colonies in all cases whatsoever.
