Li Bai 李白 / LI Bo (701-762) (traditionally, the character bai when used as a name is pronounced bo): Study Guide In contrast to WANG Wei, who was an insider to the aristocratic and cultural elite of the High Tang, LI Bai was an outsider who has come to be considered one of the two greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty. (The Tang is considered to have produced the greatest poetry of the Chinese canon.) Whereas most Tang poets made their reputations writing regulated verse ( lüshi 律詩— 8 lines of 5 or 7 characters governed by very strict rules on tonal and grammatical parallelism—on which more when we study DU Fu, the other great Tang poet ), LI Bai’s genius lies in breaking rules in order to create a unique persona. LI Bai presented himself as eccentric, and although it is unknown to what extent he himself practiced religious Daoism, he identified himself with Daoist immortals in his poetry, aspiring to find freedom in a magical world of Daoists living in a fantastic world beyond human reality.
