OB Notes Ch. 4-Khan Academy: Mitosis and Meiosis1 -Khan Academy Basics of Egg Development SpermatogenesisMale is the one that determines the sxe of the child. As sperm meet eggs called chromosomal reaction. -One sperm can only fertilize one egg. FertilizationHigh level of estrogen helps push egg along. Fertilization takes place in out 1 layer of fallopian tube. 2 – 5 million sperm released. (can live in there for about 3 days) When 2 nucleases meet up, chromosomes line up (xx female xy Male)Blastocyst develops into the embryo and the amnion sac. ImplantationOnce fertilized 7-10 days implanted. Now the endometrium is now called the deciduabecomes the maternal side and the chorionic villi becomes the fetal side. (pg. 50) Yolk sac becomes the umbilical cord. -1 vein carries oxygenated blood to the baby -2 arteries carry unoxygenated blood away from the baby. -Warton’s jelly protects the cord keeps veins and arteries from being compressed-Not a lot of amniotic fluid (is babies pee) cord ca becomes compressed (400 ml – 2000ml or AFI of 5 – 20) Less than 5 AFI or less than 400 oligohydramios (cause might be kidney problem)Too much amniotic fluid poly hydroamous (swallows it)Twins (Identical) Di – Di (WANT)-Have 2 placentas and are in 2 different sacs. -Sep 3 days within fertilizationMono – Di Twins-Twin to twin transfusion -Same placenta 2 sac -Don’t risk cord entanglement -Separate within 5 days of fertilizationMono – Mono Twins (DON’T WANT)-Share same placenta and same sac -Monitor and make sure when they move around their cords don’t get tangled-Monitor starting at 24 weeks -Within 12 days of fertilizationPlacenta

Will take over and produce progesterone (progesterone relaxes uterine and doesn’t contract)Placenta produces HCG which is what shows up on prego test. If part of placenta dies baby can have growth restriction and not grow as much. Everything crosses placenta by diffusion and baby is totally reliant on the placenta. Only way babies are getting oxygen is through placenta Embryonic Stage 15 days – 8 weeks When baby is most vulnerable to outside effects 12 weeks face dev, eyelids closed, genitals fully formed, Urine present 16week lunego (hair on outside of body), making sucking noises, start swallowing amnoic fluid, first poop (20 weeks feel baby move, hear heartbeat, 24 weeks baby is viable (chance of living), 28 32 CNS can control baby’s body temp 35-37 weeks Late pre term babies: 36 weeks get fat and hold temp and keep blood sugar up 37 – 42 weeks term (over 42 is post term)Nageles Rule: - 3 months add a week Influences of Fetal DevDrugs, alcohol, quality of genetic coding.
