Week 5 Discussion 1. What physical findings might be indicative of a patient with emphysema? Most patients present with very nonspecific symptoms of chronic shortness of breath and cough with or without sputum production. [ CITATION Pah19 \l 1033 ] As the disease process advances, the shortness of breath and cough progressively gets worse. [ CITATION Pah19 \l 1033 ] Other physical findings may include but not limited to dyspnea on exertion, use of accessory muscles, pursed lips on expiration, and a barrel shaped chest , prolonged expiration, and tripod posture that assist with breathing. 2. What is the purpose and interpretation of the pulmonary function test? The pulmonary function test is able to provide measurements of lung capacity, lung volume, and gas exchange. The measurements of all three are indicative of how well the lungs are distributing oxygen to the body. Every individual may require a different type of test, and doctors may order one or more pulmonary function tests (PFT), depending on the underlying issue. [ CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 ] They provide valuable information about the possible cause of a respiratory abnormality and evaluate the progression or resolution of disease.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
