Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental process Behavior – anything you can observe - Measurable (quantity behavior) Mental process – things that are occurring in the brain - Brain/mind - Memory - Problem-solving - Emotions How often – Frequency How intense – amplitude How long – duration Behavioral Neuroscience is the subfield of psychology that focuses on the nervous system and other body determine behavior. o Specific sites in the brain o Determine our emotions related to physical sensations Experimental psychology is the study of sensing, perceiving, learning, and thinking about the world. Cognitive psychology focuses on mental process (thinking, memory, reasoning, problem solving and language) Personality psychology focuses on the consistent behavior overtime and traits Health psychology explores relations btw psychological factors and physical disease (stress) Clinical psychology deals with the study and treatment of psychological disorder Social psychology studies how people’ thoughts and feelings are affected by other Cross culture psychology investigates the similarities and differences in psychological functioning across various cultural and ethnic groups Evolutionary psychology is the Genetic inheritance from ancestors Counseling psychologist helps people who are having difficulty adjusting to new circumstance Clinical neuro-psychology units the areas of neuroscience and clinical psychology Structuralism – Uncovering the fundamental mental components of perception, consciousness, thinking, emotions, and other kinds of mental states o A procedure used to study the structure of the mind in which subjects are asked to describe in detail what they are experiencing when they are exposed to a stimulus is called Introspection cognition

o Introspection: techniques of breaking down consciousness into its smallest parts thus defining it Functionalist would be most interested in the function of the emotion of fear in preparing us to deal with emergency situations. o Examine how people satisfy their need by focusing on thinking o How flexible people change their thinking o William James Led to functionalist movement Functionalism : Concentrated on what the mind does and how behavior functions o How behavior plays in environmental adaptation Gestalt psychology – Emphasizes how perception is organized - Our perception (understanding) is greater and more meaningful than individual elements Neuroscience perspective considers how people and nonhumans function biologically Psychodynamic perspective argues that behavior is motivated by inner force and conflicts about, which we have little awareness Sigmund Freud: unconscious determinant of behavior Behavioral perspective suggested that the focus should be on external behavior John Watson: Understanding behavior by studying the environment in which the person operates Cognitive perspective focuses on how people think, understand and know about the world Humanistic perspective
