Unit 5 - CEW “Find, fix, finish, and follow-up”(Chaterjee). The Pentagon gave this order to secret military teams in Afghanistan in regards to alleged members of Taliban and al-Qaeda members (Chaterjee). According to Harper's Index from June 2015, the percentage of Afghan inmates who say they have been tortured during imprisonment is 35. While some individuals think torture can be unethical, why isn't the percentage of tortured inmates in Afganastan and other enemy states higher since these inmates terrorize America and its ideology? Afgan and other enemy inmates may suffer while imprisoned since they have attacked and have no regard for America's population and way of life. The legal definition of torture can vary significantly depending on who gives the definition and where the definition is used. Merriam- Webster defines torture as: Noun - 1. the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure; 2a: something that causes agony or pain; b: anguish of body or mind : AGONY 3: distortion or overrefinement of a meaning or an argument : STRAINING. Verb - 1: to cause intense suffering to : TORMENT; 2: to punish or coerce by inflicting excruciating pain; 3: to twist or wrench out of shape : DISTORT, WARP” (Merriam-Webster). Article 1 of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or

Degrading Treatment or Punishment owns the legal definition of torture which is agreed upon internationally. "Torture means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions" (“A Legal Definition of Torture”). With the definition stated let’s look at some of the examples inmates faced in US detention centers and prisons abroad. When looking at Guantanamo Bay, 29%, the majority, of the detainees originated from Afghanistan. In 2002, “Gitmo” started acquiring as many as 780 prisoners since it opened. The US government deemed these prisoners “the worst of the worst” (Pitter). Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged Sept. 11 mastermind also claimed in having a hand in the the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the murder of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl, and Richard Reid's

attempted shoebombing. Abu Zubaydah, an al-Qaida operative and 9/11 plotter, is considered by human rights advocates as “the poster boy of American torture, having been waterboarded and lost an eye while held by the CIA after his capture in 2002” ( Herche). Ahmed Umar
