Project #1: Arguing Identity The problem of stereotyping is one of the most discussed issues of our days. A lot of NGOs and government programs are fighting to combat the stereotyping and discrimination, but we must also remember that generalizations have an effective role in our adaptation to a society. Stereotypes arise because of the way our brain do particular associations. They are the product of thousands of years of evolution and has controlled our attitude toward the stereotyped identity or belief. That is why we tend to classify the people we meet and the things we are dealing with according to the interactions that we had in the past. Accentuating their formation origins, stereotypes tend to be rigid and dogmatic structures. They do not change very easily, just like the first opinion we make when we meet someone. This is why many stereotypes can become harmful. We are very dynamic beings and we can change from day to day, while stereotypes are rigid ideas that tend to remain indefinitely. Therefore, they often cannot be applied in all individual cases. That’s why appears discrimination, which is nothing but the wrong application of a stereotype that leads to identity contingencies.
