} Blackwater Coal Mine MINE1010 Mineral Resources Engineering S2 2018 Bangalore Manju, Romith } z5162302 } 10/15/2018 Summary Due to the significance of the commodity sector to Australia, we were asked to research the impact that mining has had on the history of Queensland and the way this commodity is mined. To evaluate on this task, I decided to research the Blackwater Mine and assess the impact it has had on Central Queensland economically, socially and environmentally.

} Blackwater Coal Mine } Page 3 Blackwater Coal Mine MINE1010 Mineral Resources Engineering S2 2018 The importance of coal as an energy source has vastly increased over the recent centuries since its discovery. Queensland is one of Australia’s most important mining regions, specifically Central Queensland itself. Its rich mining history has shaped its growth as a state economy and allowed its nearby communities to flourish. What is coal? Coal is a combustible sedimentary rock, which is formed in either a black or brownish-black colour. It is created in layers in the rock strata, known as coal beds. If exposed in enough high pressure and temperature, coal is transformed into a different substance with a more rigid structure called anthracite coal. Being a fossil fuel, it is formed when dead plant matter is converted into peat, which in turn over the course of more than a million years, will form lignite. However, due to the extremely lengthy process of the formation of coal, it is deemed as a ‘non-renewable’ source and emphasizes issues on its current depletion. Discovery of Coal in Australia Coal was first discovered by the survivors of a vessel wreckage, who were convicts in NSW. This was dated back as early as August of 1971 near Newcastle, which was followed by a string of discoveries across Sydney. Coal was then discovered in Victoria around 1825, and in Queensland in 1870. Production or mining of coal in Australia began in NSW and Queensland in 1881, with 1,769,597 and 65,612 tons respectively. It progressively increased over the years in both states, until Victoria also started producing coal in 1891, with 22,834 tons of coal. Interesting Fact: Australia’s first coal export was to India, when 150 tons of coal left Newcastle in 1801. The Blackwater Coal mine is located in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, and is one of the most important coal mines in Australia. It has coal reserves amounting to a total of 877 million tons of coking coal, making it one of the largest in Australia and the world. The operations and efficiency conducted at this mine was rewarded through being the recipient of the 2006 Mine of the Year, at the height of the Mining investment boom Phase 1(04-07). The mine was developed in 1967 by the Utah development company, however mining operations were incorporated into Blackwater in 2000, being owned and operated by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance.
