CHAPTER 12 STUDY GUIDE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY -social psychology: the scientific study of how peoples thoughts, feelings, and actions are affected by others Attitudes -evlauations of a particular person, behavior, belief, or concdept -change depends on certain factors: message source (friend), characterisitics of the message (softly spoken), characteristics of the target (distracted). Persuasion Routes (e.g Central) -central route to persuasion: thoughtful consideration of the issues (content of the message) -peripheral route to persuasion: consideration of the source and related general information rather than of the message itself (how the message is provided) Attribution theory, situation and dispositional causes -attribution theory: seeks to explain how we decide, on the basis of samples of an individual’s behavior, what the specific causes of that person’s behavior are 1. situational causes: perceived causes of behavior that are based on environmental factors. External factors are infeluences that don’t occur within the individual but from elsewhere. Such as work and school and people around you 2. dispositional causes: perceived causes of behavior that are based on internal traits or personality factors. Ex: personality traits, temperament, and genetics Fundamental Attribution Error -tendency to over attribute others’ behavior to dispositonal causes and minimize the importance of situational causes -prevalent in western cultures Cognitive Dissonance -the conflict that occurs when a person holds two contradictory attitudes or thoughts (cognitions) -ex: smoking and it can lead to cancer.
