In medicine, it is not atypical for a patient to refuse or deviate from the prescribed plan of care. An example I can give from practice is that of a 55-year-old female diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. With her diagnosis, she consulted with oncology, was told she had a good chance of full recovery with treatment, but ultimately decided to pursue naturopathic remedies in an effort to cure her cancer. Though she refused conventional therapies for her cancer, she continued in the primary care practice. The patient declined and ultimately passed from the disease within the year. In a time where we are focused on patient-centered care, what role does the advanced practice nurse have in educating a patient in order to help them make informed decisions about their personal care? How would you have handled this scenario? What steps can you take to protect your patient and yourself in compromising situations?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
