Discussion Post: Cold War between Saudi Arabia and Iran The cold war between Iran and Saudi Arabia began after the Iranian Revolution in 1979 (Vox, 2017). One of the main objectives of the Iranian Revolution was to control the advent of the United States in the Middle East. Iran and Saudi Arabia sought to exercise regional control after the 1991 Gulf War. Religious differences between the two countries also influenced the battle for control. Iran has a large Shia Muslim population while Saudi Arabia has a large Sunni Muslim population. The battle for control over the Middle East continues as each country fights to gain control. Proxy warfare involves supporting opponents in war. The cold war has cultivated bitter relations that provide opportunities for extremist groups to arise. Some of the groups such as the Sunni and Shia militia join the proxy warfare and support opposing sides. The cold war between Iran and Saudi Arabia sparked the 2011 Arab Spring that led to violent confrontations across several Arab countries. The cold war has spread
