Jianyue Chen - Instructor History -247 December 9, 2018 Differences between the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Asian Slave Trade In the past centuries, the slave trade was a widespread activity carried out across the world. The activity involved buying, conveying and selling human beings as slaves. The merchants engaging in slave trade obtained their slaves in various ways. For instance, they purchased slaves from communities or kingdoms that sold troublesome individuals in the society. Additionally, the slave traders would raid communities and kingdoms and capture men, women, and children whom they would later sell as slaves. Moreover, slave traders would attack lone travelers and sell them as slaves. The sold slaves were engaged in forced chores such as being house servants and workers in plantations. Notably, the Atlantic slave trade originated from the expansion of Western Europe dominion that started on 15 th to 19 th century. The primary participant in the trade included countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, England, and the Netherlands. On the other hand, the slave trade in Asia developed due to the slavery practices in the ancient Near East and some of the nations that participated in the Asian slave trade included Persia and India (Collins 58). Notably, the Atlantic slave trade and Asian slave trade differed in various ways including the way the trade was conducted, the origin of the slaves, and rules governing the trade.

The Way Slave Trade was Conducted One of the differences between the two slave trades is that the Trans- Atlantic slave trade was conducted by the Spanish, British, French, Portuguese and the Dutch empires. Furthermore, the Atlantic slave trade began in the middle of 15 th century when the Portuguese had shifted their attention from the exploiting the gold mines in Africa to what they perceived as a more readily available trade commodity which was the African slaves.
