Michael Held- Instructor English 102 July 1, 2018 Immigration in Edwidge Danticat’s Novel, The Dew Breaker Topic and Justification Immigration is a prevalent theme in Edwidge Danticat’s novel, The Dew Breaker . All the short stories in the book revolve around Haitian immigrants living in the United States. In addition, the author herself is of Haitian descent, having immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. As a result, The Dew Breaker is a compelling immigration story told by an immigrant. It brings to light the plight and suffering of immigrants in a new, foreign, and strange land. Many of them live isolated and secluded lives because they left most of their families and friends in their home countries. For instance, Nadine in the story Water Child has no friends in the United States and has to call back home to find someone to confront and motivate her ( Danticat 67) . Similarly, in Seven , a Haitian immigrant lives in a basement together with his wife and two male workmates. Immigration is relevant in today’s society because of the high number of immigrants in the world. Political instability, gang wars, and poverty have forced millions of people in Africa, Mexico, and the Middle East to seek asylum in the developed world. Regretfully, the United States and many European countries have responded to this crisis by adopting harsh and punitive immigration policies. The implementation of these policies has caused further injury and suffering to the already vulnerable and hurting immigrants (Kopan). For example, the zero- tolerance policy in the United States saw immigrant children being separated from their parents and held at detention centers.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
