Trang Doan Intensive Writing Seminar Thomas Hungerford Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019 The Boy Who Is Looking For Belonging With the love of the mystery of God, Flannery O’Connor includes most of the spiritual in her story such as Good Country People, “The River.” Typically, the story “The River” in A Good Man Is Hard To Find is told from an omniscient point-of-view and shows a day in the life of the main character, Harry Ashfield. Harry is a four or five, skinny boy, who lives under a careless, abused family. His family is a type of partying at night and sleeping in the morning; they won’t do anything until next afternoon. In the story, Harry/Bevel’s ironical awareness of getting somewhere as he is drowning shows both neglect and belonging. Throughout the story, Harry/Bevel attempts to escape the home in which he has been raised. The author Harry/Bevel as a skinny boy and he was abused and careless in the house. For instance, In addition, when the story starts, his dad says goodbye to Harry, he was “[jumping] as if he had been shot” (25). Through this action, the author shows that he was in some way abused by his father. That this abuse has happened more than one time is clear in Harry/Bevel’s frightened response to his father.
