DISCOVERING HOW TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF I had my first anxiety attack the night before second grade. Thinking of school made my breathing difficult and vision blurry. In middle school the viperous butterflies paired with a new poison: depression. Warmth exited my world, I was living not only in the cold, but in constant confusion. I had no idea how to combat these invisible enemies. Guilt crept in as I convinced myself there was no reason to feel this way. I was certain financial struggles and the death of a loved one were no excuses, and it seemed that other people could overcome worse. That meant there was no reason to tell anyone. I searched for coping mechanisms to hide me, my favorite being reading. Immersing myself into a new existence was the greatest escape. The characters all had struggles, so through their stories I felt validated. Making connections was healing, but indulging in literature was a substitute for a real solution. By freshman year of high school, the distractions that had helped my mental health struggles stay hidden weren’t enough. My grandpa was diagnosed with cancer, I was forced into separating from my siblings to move in with my dad, and I had a new school. Being apart from my young sister was especially difficult because she needed me to make sure she ate and studied. When I looked after her, I felt significant. But the signs of my struggle were becoming too much
