Marcia Friel - Professor’s HUM - 202 May 7, 2019 Beethoven’s 5th Symphony Question #4 Beethoven’s fifth symphony is a philosophy of his life because it embodies the lifestyle and the musical style of Beethoven. For example, it conveys the intimate thoughts developed by Beethoven. Beethoven’s 5th symphony is also a philosophy of his life because it depicts Beethoven's secret sorrows, the rage that had continually defined his life, the oppression the life has given him, his nocturnal visions, and his enthusiasm ( Mikutta 425). These articulations mean that the music epitomized the life of Beethoven because it expressed not only the positivity that characterized the artist's life but also the negative aspects of his life. Therefore, Beethoven’s 5th symphony symbolizes his life; hence making it a philosophy of his life. Beethoven’s 5th symphony is also affirming life because the different elements of music incorporated in it narrate the life experiences of Beethoven. For example, the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and orchestral forms convey the novelty and individualism that define life ( Mikutta 426). This means that it affirms life because the musical elements it depicts the emotions including the sorrows and joy of life. Moreover, the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic elements conveyed in Beethoven’s 5th symphony also affirms life since they demonstrate the power and nobility of life ( Mikutta 427). Beethoven’s 5th symphony also celebrates the endowment of life through depicting the lifestyle of Beethoven thus implying that it affirms life. For example, the fate rhythmic element and the movement features in Beethoven’s 5th symphony affirm life since they convey the mysteries of life as well as how to address them. Of all the philosophers learned in class, Friedrich Nietzsche is the philosopher whose philosophical ideas relate to Beethoven’s 5th symphony. Nietzsche’s philosophy relates to Beethoven’s 5th symphony because they both recognize the importance of music in personifying the life of an individual. For example, Nietzsche’s philosophy states that music is a vessel upon which the miseries of one's life are depicted ( Bowie 12). This implies that through arts such as music, one could escape from earthly lives and experience the transcendental power or understand the spiritual realm.
