Surname 1 Name Professor Course Date The Tragedy of Hamlet Act I Scene II The Prince continues to mourn the death of his father, but the King, his uncle, would not tolerate it. Claudius treats the prince as a child by accusing him of unmanly grief . He challenges Hamlet in a manner befitting a concerned father and a responsible king. He wants to assert his power over Hamlet and the kingdom. He justifies his ascension to kingship by patronizing Hamlet’s ability to become king, even though Hamlet is the rightful heir to the monarchy (Shakespeare, Scene II). This section reflects on the theme of deception. Claudius manipulates Hamlet by demeaning his status and justifying his claim as the ruler. He scolds Hamlet by accusing him of having an understanding simple and unschool'd , and a mind impatient (Shakespeare, Scene II). Claudius talks Hamlet out of the kingship struggle by telling him that he is the immediate successor to the kingdom to persuade him to wait for his tenure to end.
