Fidel Castro One of the most controversial leaders of all time, Fidel Castro is no doubt the most famous Cuban trailblazer ever. He rose to power through battling and scratching and clawing his way to the top. He has literally been faced with death more often than one would imagine as a leader of a country, especially in the modern era. It is hard to define the man himself in a few words or terms. To define Fidel Castro, you would need to learn about his political views as well as his racial/ethnic background. This is because Castro was a nationalist who wanted the best for Cuba. However, the reason why Castro was viewed as such a controversial figure was because of how extreme his views are, and he went to tremendous lengths to try and achieve whatever it was that he sought out to do. This simple fact can either have you label him as admirable, or a maniac. There is almost no in between when it comes to Fidel Castro. Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in Biran, Cuba. He was the illegitimate son of a wealthy farmer and landowner and his mistress. Growing up, Fidel went to a number of different schools. When Fidel was six, along with his elder siblings Ramón and Angela, they were all sent to live with their teacher in Santiago de Cuba. At this time, they were living in cramped conditions and relative poverty, often failing to have enough to eat. This was because of their tutor's poor economic situation. Fidel eventually attended the University of Havana to study law. This was where Castro really started to become embroiled in politics, which obviously ultimately played a role in his life. Fidel was heavily involved in violent protests at his school. These protests often led to deaths and gang violence. Fidel became increasingly passionate about politics. He became an avid supporter of anti-imperialism and more than vocal critic of the United States and their

involvement in the Caribbean. He also was vocal about his opposition of Cuban leaders and how they conduct their business. He called them corrupt and dishonest. Fidel was also critical of U.S involvement in Cuba. All of Fidel’s views had people label him as an extreme leftist and socialist. He joined numerous socialist groups and unions to continue to voice his beliefs. This led him to make numerous enemies, including Ramon Grau, who was a Cuban president. Grau caused tremendous amount of student violence after Grau employed gang leaders as police officers. Castro soon received death threats urging him to leave the university, largely in part due to his radical political beliefs. He refused to leave the university and began carrying a gun and surrounding himself with armed friends as protection. This spoke volumes about Castro’s mindset in terms of the fact that he will constantly put himself in danger as long as he gets to get his point across and make waves in the political world. Castro was in a dog eat dog world in Latin America and he knew it. In a place full of corruption, violence, and gang affiliations, he had to do what he had to
