TAO Qian, Owen Anthology , pp. 311-318: Study Guide Pay special attention to Confucius Analects XI.26 and “Seasons Shift”; “Biography of Master Five Willows”; “Drinking Wine” [V]; “Returning to Dwell in Gardens and Fields” [I]; “Begging.” TAO Qian 陶潛 (Q=ch Tao Ch’ien; 365-427). He is also known as TAO Yuanming 陶淵明 , his birth name. He took the name Qian, which means ‘submerged, hidden,’ to reflect his decision to withdraw from official service in 405. TAO Qian and LIU Yiqing 劉義慶 (403-444), compiler of New Stories and Tales of the Times ( Shishuo xinyu 世說新語 ) lived at about the same time. The writings of both reflect a loss of faith in institutionalized Confucian government and the growth of interest in the individual. 1. Tao Qian’s poetry - Main topic – the act of decision o retelling the decision o justifying the decision o proclaiming his contentment with his decision o praising exemplary figures in the past who were models for such a decision - A poetry of individual and glorified the individual’s claims against the claims of public life - Has been read as an implicit condemnation of the failure of the Eastern Jin government.
