Note 1 Read: Notes 1,2,3,4,5 Plato’s Allegory of the Cave Skim Note 6 focusing on Plato and Aristotle Welcome to humanities 202. This course will cover elements of the humanities relating to philosophy, drama, and music. Through this study, I hope you develop tools to assist you in evaluating and discussing each of these areas of the humanities. In essence, we will be learning how parts make up a whole and how elements of writing, discourse, music, and arguments are formed. Through our 3 main subjects in this course philosophy, dramatic theater, and music , we will also learn how each of these areas contributed to the development of thinking, how the mind works, and how this pertains to being a human being. As human beings there are things that separate us from animals. What those things are is still a debate today. However, 2 items that will be important to our readings are empathy and reason . 1) Empathy (feeling in as one) as opposed to mere sympathy (feeling with and therefore remaining apart) was used in rituals our ancestors’ re-enacted in myths in order to achieve empathetic identification with an archetypal (primary figure) power to produce a desired effect.
