It is about a woman, Edna Pontellier, who is a mother and wife and is struggling with her role as a woman of a high social class known as the bourgeoisie . In On this period of time women were supposed to follow the rules when these were part of the bourgeoisie to meet the standards. On the other hand, Edna, who is married to Léonce Pontellier, is having feminist thoughts of how she should be equal to men and be able to make decisions not based on rules; it is where the battle on her head begins. On one side is how she should follow the rules and be a good mother and wife to her family and on the other side is her desire to fulfill her wants and needs as a woman. If it was not a mother’s place to look after children, whose on earth was it?” (Chopin 8). Here, we can see how Léonce is reproaching Edna about how she is not doing what she is supposed to.
