Student name Institution Instructor Course date This essay focuses on using contemporary research to relatively give a critical analysis and appraise one chosen research element in each of the two selected research articles and identify the reliability, validity, and credibility of the two provided articles. Also, the essay will discuss the two selected articles on basis of their position within the hierarchy of evidence as well as exploring their importance to the midwifery community of practice and usefulness of evidence and research in professional practice. The first selected article by Keerrs et al (2015) on "Understanding the causes of intravenous medication administration errors in hospitals” aimed at investigating the underlying causes of intravenous medication administration errors among nurses. Nurses administer drugs directly to patients and they are the last link in the safe medication administration chain. Due to the increased acuity of patients they serve and the decrease in the resources available to ensure safe practice, there are more chances of errors to occur. The study was thus taken up to describe their perspectives towards medication administration practices, sources, and reporting of errors. The second article, “Mathematical calculation skills required for drug administration undergraduate nursing students to ensure patient safety” by Bagnasco et al (2016) which aimed at exploring difficulties that nursing students face in calculating drug dosages and identify appropriate educational interventions to bridge their mathematical knowledge gaps. Most nurses have a poor mathematical background that results in errors in drug administration which may pose a threat to the safety of the patient. Bagnasco et al (2016) conducted a quantitative descriptive study by use of a K.Wright’s assessment tool and assessment questionnaire while Keers et al (2015) carried out a qualitative critical incident study using semistructured interviews with nurse participants using the critical incident technique where the nurses were requested to give their views on the causes of intravenous medication administration errors that they had experienced in their work. They further utilized the Framework approach to analyze the transcribed interviews and the emerging themes were categorized according to Reason’s model of accident causation. Descriptive quantitative research aims at collecting quantifiable information that can be utilized for statistical analysis while the qualitative critical incident study is a technique that has a flexible set of principles that are easily modified to meet the particular problem at hand and is mostly used in health sciences. The qualitative approach seeks to understand people’s experiences. The two selected articles present similar research topics though utilizing different data collection methods. Therefore this article will explore
