EXPERIMENT 1 : RECRYSTALLIZATION OF VANILLIN OBJECTIVE 1. To purify the crude vanillin through recrystallization technique. 2. To determine the recovery percentage of recrystallized vanillin. INTRODUCTION Recrystallization is a technique utilizes the observation that the solubility of solids in liquids usually increases dramatically as the solvent temperature is increased. A barely saturated solution of the solid in the hot solvent is prepared and allowed to cool. The solubility decreases as the temperature drops. Solid crystalizes back out upon cooling. These impurities pass through the final cold filtration. APPARATUS 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask Hot plate Glass rod Buchner funnel Filter paper CHEMICALS Crude vanillin Distilled water PROCEDURE 1. 2 g of vanillin were weighed and put into Erlenmeyer flask. 2. 50 ml of distilled water were added to the flask and stirred vigorously. 3. The solution was heated until all the vanillin was dissolves. 4. The flask has been placed in an ice bath for 5 minutes. 5. A filter paper was placed properly in the Buchner funnel to make sure the holes are covered. 6. The filter paper was wet with distilled water and the crystallized vanillin crystal has been vacuumed. 7. Erlenmeyer flask was rinse with ice-cooled distilled water and the crystal in the funnel has been wash by the water. 8. The crystal was put onto a weighed piece of filter paper and left it until dry. 9. The recrystallized vanillin was weighed and the data has been recorded.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
