21 st CENTURY LITERATURE FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE WORLD DIVISIONS OF LITERATURE: PROSE AND POETRY 1. PROSE A form of language that has no metrical structure. It applies a natural flow of speech and ordinary grammatical structure. A. Prose Drama – a drama in prose form. It consists entirely of dialogues in prose, and is meant to be acted on stage. Plays – Divided into acts and each act has many scenes. B. Essay – a short literary composition which is expository in nature. The author shares some of his thoughts, feelings, experiences or observations on some aspects of life that have interested him. Example: Carmen Guerrero Nakpil’s “Where is the Patis?” C. Prose Fiction – something invented, imagined or feigned to be true. Novel – a long fictitious narrative with complicated plot. It may have a main plot and one or more sub-plots that develop with the main plot. Characters and actions representative of the real life of past or present times are portrayed in a plot. It is made up of chapters. Example: Without Seeing the Dawn by Steven Javellana. Short Story – often referred to as a “slice of life.” a fictitious narrative compressed into one unit of time, place and action. It deals with a single character interest, a single emotion or series of emotions called forth by a single situation. It is distinguished from the novel by its compression. Example: Dead Stars by Paz Marquez – Benitez. Legend – it came from the medieval Latin word “legenda” which means “things for reading” these are fictitious narratives, usually about origins. Popularly regarded as historically factual but actually a mixture of fact and fiction. - A legend is set in a specific place and specific time; the subject is often a historical personage. Fables – These are also fictitious and they deal with animals and inanimate things who speak and act like people and their purpose is to enlighten the minds of children to events that can mold their ways and attitudes. D. Biography and Autobiography Biography – a story of a certain person’s life written by another who knows him or her (the former) well.
