Humans as a species have found various ways to extend their life spans and improve quality of life. Scientific advancements, such as vaccinations, give people a chance to combat certain diseases that may have killed them otherwise. Vaccinations are defined as a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases. This substance in question has eradicated serious life threatening diseases such as smallpox all the way to preventing the common flu, but people are divided on whether vaccinations should be implemented. One side of the debate sees an importance in fighting preventable diseases, while the other side believes for various reasons that vaccines are unnatural and the aversive side effects are not worth the claims of health. Humans should vaccinate themselves and their children, for the health and well being of all. Many people refute the claim that vaccinations are the right decision. A big reason can be found in the fact that vaccines are known to come equipped with side effects. Jason Behrmann, a PhD candidate in bioethics and an assistant professor at the University of Montreal, states in the academic journal Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology that “...vaccines do occasionally cause side-effects and adverse drug reactions.” Then Behrmann lists the less severe as pain, inflammation and excess fluid collecting in cavities and tissues of the body. He also states that certain vaccine recipients will contract an allergic reaction not even from the vaccine itself but from the manufacturing process. Severe allergic reactions are also possible and are called
Pitcher 2anaphylactic shock, including symptoms such as loss of consciousness, swelling of tongue and breathing tubes, heart failure and death (par. 10). Also stated in the same journal, Behramm writes that “Additional pathologies pertaining to the severe cognitive and physical disability have been observed to coincide temporally with the administration of vaccines” as many people opposing vaccines fear this exact side effect (par. 12).
