Geographically, India is located in South Asia coversa diverse terrain with its huge land mass. The country ranks position seven on the list of thelargest countries in the world and is the second on the table of most populated countries in theworld that embrace democracy. Indian’ population make is good target market place formultinational companies.A1.CultureCulture defines people’s way of life, ranging from speech to customs. India accommodatediverse religions, coexisting in unity on the same land. One of the most striking phenomenonregarding the culture of India is that it is among the oldest, unique, and colorful ones in theworld. For instance, “Namaste” is a commonly known Indian term that insinuates respectfulgreetings to the elders and outsiders. It also includes the youthful cohorts. There is great respectwhen greeting guests. Ideally, “The Guest is considered equal to God” (Joshi, 2012).Indian people speak different languages depending on diversity of their locations. All areas havedifferent languages, which are their respective mother tongue. Other than English and Hindi,India’s other languages include Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Punjabi, among others.Indians have numerous festivals that are marked with commemorations and public celebration. Atypical is the Diwali festival, meant to celebrate the victory of good over evil. Other relatedfestivals include Dussehra, Holi, Ramadan, Christmas, Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Pooja, amongothers. Moreover, there are vast types of music festivals in India. These include Hornbill, Ziro,Sunburn, Mahindra Blues, NH7 weekender, the Escape, among others, all meant forentertainment. The entertainment industry is rich of art, literature, theatre and film (Bollywood).Ramayana is a landmark literature work in India. Another aspect of the Indian culture is the
INTERNATIONAL MARKETING3Indian cuisine. The Moghul’s Empire enriched this in the 16th Century upon the invasion.Indians love spicy foods and use herbs as an accompaniment for most of the dishes. Huge part ofthe population are vegetarians, although non-vegetarians use goat, lamb, and chicken (Joshi,2012).A2. PoliticalThe political arena falls under the macro environment in business. The prevailing politicalsituation in a country can either positively or negatively affect business performance in thatcountry. Politics could range from government types to government policies that have impact onthe businesses. India is a parliamentary government with a federal structure. India’s politics arepreservative, a fact endorsed by the fact that is governed by 1949 constitution. In theory, thepresident of India has executive power, although it is actually exercised by the prime ministerand the council of ministers who are appointees of the president. Indian parliament is bicameral;
