A.A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is the theory of cultural care diversity and universality by Madeline Leninger. While it is important to look at a patient as a whole person from a physiological, psychological, spiritual, and social perspective, it is also important to take a patient’s culture and cultural background into consideration when deciding how to care for that patient (Nursing Theory, n.d.). I feel that in order to be the best nurse we have to be culturally competent. This means not judging why people do things differently or they believe differently. It means understanding why they do things differently or think differently. It also means to learn about the patient’s culture and incorporate that in the nursing plan to help the patient get better. My goal is to be a culturally competent nurse. The theory mentioned above fits my professional practice. I work with patients of different cultures each shift. I have to be aware of and understanding of other’s culture. Upon admission, I ask the patient if there are any cultural preferences during their hospitalization. If they say yes, I ask them what specifically they would like and I like to get to know a little about their culture. I pass this information on to the next nurse. I feel that incorporating their culture helps with healing because their belief about healing plays a part in their psychological healing as well. At the last hospital I worked at thehospital was culturally competent. They incorporated foods for ethnicities that were prominent in the area. They also incorporated cultural rituals with healing. They would allow shamans to come visit the patients because they believed shamans helped with the healing process. At another hospital, we had toeducate the staff about death and dying in my culture. We have a big population in that community. The ICU nurses were getting annoyed that there were too many people coming to see the patient that had just passed. We had to educated them that we are a close knit community and that if someone passes away; we all come and give our respect to that person when the person dies. They were

understanding of the process. I think that ignorance of other’s cultures makes us incompetent as nurses. We should always ask before we judge. And we should always realize that the western way is not everyone’s way. B.When I think of nursing, I think of two historical figures. The first one is Florence Nightingale. She is the first nurse theorist. She investigated how the environment played a role in healing. There were 7 things she investigated as far as the environment. The first one was warming and ventilation.
