Material report(group 2) 460117052 12thMay 2018 1:Introduction and Objectives During the lab, properties of different five aluminum alloy coupons can be analyzed by performing varies tensile deformation according to the standard AS 1391-2007. The main principle of this experiment is that the microstructure and composition of each aluminum alloy coupons is different. On microstructure of a material, it consists of small crystals which called grains and the grain boundaries can impede dislocation movement to determine the mechanical behavior of a material. Hence, there are two strengthening mechanisms which is solid solution strengthening( heat treatment) and precipitation hardening (aging) in this laboratory and these two mechanisms can change the grain size to influence dislocation movement and strength. The first coupon is pure aluminum which has higher proportion of aluminum and the performance of fracture of this specimen can be a basis for comparison to get a better understanding of the other four aluminum alloys and then a more concise conclusion about the best material to bear load can be made. The second specimen is a solution heat treated aluminum alloy and it has been heat treated for 1 hour at 550 .Solid solution heat treatment provides an efficient way to change the properties by manipulating the rate of cooling within the microstructure. The specimen is heated in a suitable temperature (550in this experiment), holding it at that temperature an hour to make more constituents to enter into a solid solution followed by cooling it rapidly enough to prevent the dissolved constituent from precipitating.Instead of simply applying heat treatment, there are other three aluminium alloy coupons also have been aged on different conditions. Prior to the lab, the third specimen will have been solution heat treated for 1 hour at 550first and then aged at 175for two hours. In
