Anatomy – Upper Limb Types of joints Fibrous – immobile Sutures – squamous (overlap), serrate (interlock), fontinculi (baby's spot spot) Syndesmoses – sheet of fibrous tissue (e.g. interosseus membrane b/w radius and ulna) Gomphoses – teeth (e.g. tooth alveolus anchored by periodontal ligament) Cartilagenous – immobile (e.g. intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, manubriosternal joint) Synovial – mobile (e.g. articular discs, menisci) Articular surface (covered by cartilage) Articular capsule Joint cavity Joint capsule (ext. fibrous layer, int. synovial membrane, synovial fluid, ligaments) Synovial joints (uniaxial, biaxial, multiaxial) Plane – uniaxial, gliding or sliding (e.g. acromioclavicular joint, iliosacral joint) Hinge – uniaxial, flexion-extension (e.g. Elbow joint) Saddle – biaxial, flexion-extension, abduction-adduction(e.g. Thumb) Condyloid – biaxial, flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, circumduction (e.g. Radiocarpal joint) Ball and socket – multiaxial (e.g. Shoulder joint, hip joint) Pivot – uniaxial, rotate around central axis (e.g. Atlantoaxial joint) Shoulder joint – glenoid cavity enlarge by fibrocartilagenous glenoid labrum Joints: acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular Ligaments: coraco-humeral, gleno-humeral (2-3), coraco-acromial, tendon of long head of biceps, transverse (keep long head biceps tendon in bicipital groove) Abduction-adduction, flexion-extension, rotation, circumduction Elbow joint (compound) flexion-extension, rotation Humero-ulnar – uniaxial, hinge (trochlea of humerus w/ trochlear notch of ulna) flexion-extension Proximal radio-ulnar – uniaxial, pivot circumference of head of radius art. w/ radial notch of ulna, secured by annular ligament rotation of radius, pronation-supination of forearm Distal radio-ulnar joint – pivot (head of ulna, ulnar notch of radius) Radiocarpal joint (wrist) – biaxial, condyloid distal end of radius art. w/ scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, circumduction Ligaments: collateral radial + ular ligg. of carpus, radiocarpal palmar lig. Intercarpal joint – plane Carpo-metacarpal joint – synovial 1 st [thumb] – biaxial, saddle (tranpezoid, base of 1 st metacarpal) flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, opposition-reposition Inter-metacarpal joints Metacarpo-phalangeal joints [MCP] (knuckles) – ball and socket MCP of thumb - hinge Proximal interphalageal (PIP), distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints – hinge Shoulder muscles (rotator cuff = supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis) Deltoid muscle 1
