Analysis
In chapter four of Black star, the author talks about how African American churches used
to be a place to congregate and promote social, economic, spiritual, and political growth. The
author also talks about the black church and how it was a place where people could self-govern
and express themselves. Ritual dancing, medical practices and drumming codes that African
Americans used to use to communicate were against the law. The roles of churches in the black
community are very important in the African American community. Nowadays it seems like
church is not how it used. There are certain traditions that churches don’t go by anymore. When I
was back at home, I attended my Grandpa and my boyfriend’s church occasionally. They go to
two totally different types of churches and it was interesting to see how different their services
were. In both of their churches, their spiritual leader is their pastor. After reading the essay ‘The
