What You Learned: Nationalism 1. List the ten features of nationalism and give an example of each. a. territory – possessed or coveted, groups that would like to have a nation. Examples of groups that would like to have a nation are the kurds. For example, in Turkey, Iraq and Israel. b. Cultural characteristics – common language, customs, manners and literature. For example, Spanish or French, in Japan you eat using chopsticks which is not common in the United States and the Great Gatsby would be a great novel in which in the Hispanic literature culture would be Don Quixote. c. Institutions – religious institution in which certain countries have established state religions. For example, economic systems such as capitalism vs socialism during the period of the cold war, the socialist Soviet Union vs the capitalist United States facing off against one another on the world stage over the question of whose version of civilization was superior. d. Independent government – the desire to have a government or territory or which the government will govern. e. Common history - a belief in common history which talks about important dates. For example, the Declaration of Independence, Labor Day and Fourth of July.
