Lab 1 Terminology: Definitive host The organism in which the parasite reproduce sexually or in which the adult states of parasite live Intermediate host The organism in which the parasite reproduces asexually or in which the larval stages of parasite live Possible Host Species Monoxenous parasite A parasite that infects only single host species Mono = one, xenos= host Polyxenous parasite A parasite that infects many host species Poly = many, xenos = host Parasite Life Cycle Homoxenous parasite The parasite that completes the whole life cycle in one host organism Heteroxenous parasite Organism living within more than one host during that life cycle. The parasite has to change the host to complete the life cycle. Diseases = species name + osis Ascaris + osis = ascariosis Geographical distributions: endemic or cosmopolitan Lab 2 Parasitic Protozoa Unicellular organisms living in different tissue and organs of the host Very small in size – from 1μm (microsporidia) to approximately 150 μm (ciliate) Parasitic protozoa are transmitted between hosts in different ways. Sometimes the transmission is related to stages in the parasite’s reproduction Reproduction in protozoa may be either asexual or sexual , although many species alternate both types of reproduction in their life cycles. Parasititc forms are found in the groups of: “ameba” -> pseudopodia “flagellates” -> flagella, undulating membrane “ciliate” -> cilia
