Purpose In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark to explore the wilderness of the newly-acquired Louisiana Purchase, establish contact with the Indians and locate the rumored Northwest Passage.

Crew and Equipment The Corps of Discovery included around 45 soldiers, and hired crewmen, including a French-Indian translator one slave, York, and one dog, Seaman. Later on, the expedition Sacagawea and her husband would join the crew. Woodsmen and sharpshooters like George Drouillard were also recruited.

Crew and Equipment (Cont.) They traveled in two piroques (basically a large canoe) in addition to a larger keel boat mounted with a swivel gun, as well as maller vessels and horseback. Some of their supplies included trade goods for the indians, navigational instruments and other necessities.
