Experiment # Atwood’s MachineLab Objective:To observe Newtons 3rdLaw by observing forces exerted on objects.Lab Theory:Newton has three laws of motion. In this lab we are observing the third law of motion which states that, whenever one object exerts a force on the second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first one. These two forces, on different bodies, will have the same magnitude,but their direction will be opposite. This is the law of action and reaction. It states that net force comes from other objects. When two objects m1 and m2 are hung from a pulley with a string or rope then another force also acts on the masses. This force is called tension. m1 can exert T (tension) on m2. M2 exerts a force of same magnitude on m1 through the string. This setup is an Atwood’s Machine. An ideal Atwood’s Machine would be frictionless and a mass neglecting pulley. The Atwood’s Machine were created to verify the laws of motion for constant acceleration by Newton.
