Danielle S. Dolor The Jilting of Granny Weatherall- I&A #1 Katherine Anne Porter in 1966 won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Collected Stores. One of her well known works is the short story of The Jilting of Granny Weatherall . The story demonstrates the literary techniques of foreshadowing, conflict, and recognition to emphasize how the main character, Granny experiences her negligence, denial, and acceptance which leads to her demise. The title itself explicitly explains the overarching theme of the story. According to Merriam Webster, the word jilt means “ to cast off or reject (someone, such as a lover) capriciously or unfeelingly”. The author intended the title to discuss that Granny was “jilted” not only by the man that left her at the altar but also by God. As the story progresses, the author refers to religion in many scenarios by the use of God, Lord, and etc. First, the literary device that emphasizes Porter’s intent of her story is through the use of foreshadowing. Foreshadow is a prediction of what will happen in the end or middle of the story
