Do Max Weber and Emile Durkheim's ideas contradict or complement Karl Marx in the context of social and economic structure? Briefly discuss and explain? Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Karl Marx all had very different viewpoints in the context of social and economic structure. Emile Durkheim believed in social facts, Marx believed in the socially determined economic structure, and Max Weber believed that social status was based on one's relationship to the market. Max Weber very much contradicted Karl Marx's view in the context of social and economic structure and lifestyles. Weber's most famous work, the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism was a seminal essay on differences of religions and how the followers of such things could become wealthy. Max Weber grew up around the highly capitalist structure of the Calvinists, and although they believed in pre- destination they also had a high work ethic and in turn much of what was profited was reinvested into society creating a society that could maintain itself above many social deterrents. The result was a society that was almost entirely at the very least middle class as a result of work of the common man. Max Weber's views are very capitalist, and the article that he wrote was a criticism of some of Karl Marx's idealisms and
