Michael Graves, born July 9, 1934, was a leading American architect and designer, instrumental in the emergence of Post-Modernism in the mid-1970’s. He is credited with moving American architectural thought from modernism to post-modernism. As a postmodernist architect, his designs were both provocative and innovative. His works range from large-scale projects such as the Public Services building in Portland, Oregon to designs for everyday items such as furniture and teapots. Graves founded his practice in Princeton, New Jersey in 1964 and taught at Princeton University for 40 years. Graves' works brought him international recognition as a leading figure in Post-Modernism, but not without creating controversy. With other Post-Modernists, he was accused of extremism for radically departing from Modernism's pragmatic expression of function and materials. Graves
