SUMMARY 2Case Study Article SummaryHealth care systems have experienced an increase of self-pay accounts due to the lack of health insurance. Hospitals carry a burden of having thousands of dollars of unpaid debt for services rendered. Finding a solution that can help to successfully increase payments from patients can help to alleviate this debt. Educating patients every given chance about their responsibilities and what the financial policies are can help to increase the amount of money that is collected from self-pay patients. As with everything in life there is a wrong way and a right way to get something done. An example of a health care system that tried collecting payments the wrong way was Fairview Health Services in Minnesota. Fairview contracted Accretive Health and they took a very aggressive approach in collecting payments. “Often, according to the report, Accretive's employees targeted patients through lists of those scheduled to receive surgery. They also focused on pregnant women” (Eggertson, 2012). Accretive targeted these vulnerable patients because they knew that receiving treatment was important to this group. Many times they left patients fearing that if they didn’t make a payment they wouldn’t receive adequate treatment.A health system that is proactive can have better success with patients making payments.
