10-2 : “Political Culture, Political Socialization, Public Opinion, & Polls 1. Political Culture – Those beliefs, values, and ideas you have about the political system. a. Accumulation of beliefs, values, and ideas of the country 2. Political Socialization – The process through which individuals acquire their political beliefs and values. a. Transmission of “beliefs and Values” from generation to generation. i. Family, School and Peers, Mass Media, Religious Beliefs & Race. 1. Jews – typically Liberal 2. Catholics – Mixed 3. Protestants – Typically conservative ii. Weather Channel – Shows the U.S Map 1. Teaches us patriotism, and unity b. Crystal City Texas – lots of kids didn’t speak English. i. Raised city taxes, in order to bring in more teachers to teach English to the kids. 1. “Rule # 1”: If you cannot speak English, you cannot enroll in Public Schools in Crystal City. a. At noon a Spanish speaking radio station was on for an hour, eventually a Spanish newspaper was introduced, and whites just ignored.
