1. The Hidden History of Product Placement Similarly, in the article, ‘The Hidden History of Product Placement’ discusses when this form of advertising first made its way into the ad world. Product placements’ beginning is an argued one. Some say it began as early as the 1920’s and others argue that it wasn’t an organized business or thought until the mid 1980s. Even the term product placement is disputed; some believe that ‘brand placement’ would be a more appropriate term because it’s generally not only a product within a film that is being sold to the consumer but it is an actual brand . A reason this might be so disputed is because the phrase ‘product placement’ wasn’t coined until the mid-1980s, but arguments are being made about films that were created long before the phrase was made. So, the issue in question is not when it began, but when it was acknowledged. Another question facing product placement is how to determine if it is infact a ‘product placement item’.
