Cuba was initially inhabited by the indigenous. Aboriginal people including Guanahatabey, Ciboney, and Taíno. In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived, and the island was subsequently invaded by the Spaniards. Columbus originally named the island “Juana”. The name “Cubanacan” is said to be the Indian name and the Spanish slowly shortened the name to “Cuba”. (Wilkinson, 2018) In 1511, Diego Velasquez conquered the island and claimed it as Spanish territory. The indigenous would later die from disease brought by the Spaniards. African slaves were brought to Cuba to plant and harvest sugar cane and tobacco. Slavery would later be abolished in 1886. In the late 1800’s, Cuba fought three wars for independence against Spain which would be referred to as the Ten Years War. Cuba lost this war. The Second war for independence began in 1895 and in 1898, the United States went to war with Spain which ended with Spain relinquishing rights to Cuba. Cuba gained its independence in 1902 however, the USA would maintain strong influence of the island. (Lambert, 2019)
