Who Invented Braille? Invented by Louis Braille (1824) when he was 15 years old Became blind (age 3) from an accident French educator, Musician, Researcher Modified system of “night writing” intended for use on ships Army captain, Charles Barbier, invented system for soldiers to read and communicate messages safely at night (1821) Louis and his friends believed that feeling “raised dots” was easier than feeling raised letters Raised letters could not be written by blind people
