Wednesday September 5, 2007 Broca's Area : damage to Broca's area causes impairments in generating speech;  can be studied with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).  This proves  functional localization. Spinal Cord- bundle of nerves protected by vertebral column. Hindbrain - contains  Medulla  (involved in circulation, breathing, muscle tone, &  reflexes), the  Pons  (important for sleep and arousal) and the  Cerebellum  (coordination of movement and equilibrium). Midbrain - integrates sensory processes; produces  dopamine  (neurotransmitter  discussed in previous lecture).  Includes Reticular formation: fibers that regulate  sleep, arousal, breathing, and pain perception. Forebrain -  contains Thalamus (information is sent here before moving on to the cortex) Hypothalamus (regulates basic needs like temperature and hunger) Limbic system (network of hypothalamus, thalamus, hippocampus & the
