SOCIAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY 2 Definition of Social Media Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the interactions of individuals through sharing of content in real-time. These consist of various applications and websites that are specially designed to allow people to share ideas, photos, interests, and information through networks and virtual communities. Examples o social media applications are Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn among others. The concept of social media was created in 1978 with the development of the Bulletin Board System for announcing business meetings and sharing of ideas. Since then, there have been various developments that have expanded the scope of social media platforms (Anderson & Jiang, 2018). The idea of social media can be compared to an ancient Egypt where ideas are written on walls with people worshipping cats. How Social Media and Technology Influence How We Form Our Identity The development of social media and technology has contributed to shaping our identity both positively and negatively. People spend most of their free time on social media platforms that are aided by various technological developments such as Smartphones. The continuous access and use of the internet enable people to stay connected through the sharing of ideas and photos. Sharing enables various people to grasp knowledge and ideas that play a great role in shaping the way they think and view ideas and concepts. Accordingly, the social media platforms take its users to virtual worlds where they get to explore various contents which influence the way people think about themselves and others (Trainor et al. 2014).
