These plumes of magma are very long-lived, lasting for millions of years. An interesting observation of hotspots is that they appear to remain relatively stationary over of long periods of time. Over the course of millions of years, a hotspot beneath the oceanic lithosphere produces a chain of volcanic islands, called a hotspot track (Figure 8).
