Beirut Arab University Mechanics of Materials- CVEE309 Civil Engineering Department Sixth Semester- Fall 2012-2013 Faculty of Engineering Homework [4]- Solution Eng. Meheddene Machaka Problem 1: A 60-m -long steel wire is subjected to 6-kn tensile force. Knowing that E=200 GPa and that the length of the rod increases by 48mm , determine (a) the smallest diameter that may be selected for the wire, (b) the corresponding normal stress. Problem 2: A control rod made of yellow brass must not stretch more than 3mm when the tension in the wire is 4kN. Knowing that E=105 GPa and that the maximum allowable normal stress is 180 MPa, determine(a) the smallest diameter that can be selected for the rod, (b) the corresponding maximum length of the rod.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
