Throughout this paper with supported evidence gained from two different ethical approaches the writer will explain how Christians might begin to deal with the moral dilemma of poverty. Specifically, “What can the local Church do to aid in poverty relief efforts?” To effectively sustain an educated answer to the question both Revelation Christian Ethics and Divine Command Theory will be utilized. Revelational Christian Ethics as indicated by our textbook, uses the Bible as its primary resource, “supported by careful thinking and sensitivity to the heart and conscience.” 1 Divine Command Theory is heavily influenced by scripture. This theory describes when something is right or wrong based off the teachings in God’s word. Our book uses this terminology to illustrate this theory, “…since God is the source of all things, he must also be the source of morals, too. Furthermore, since God is sovereign and omnipotent, he has both the authority and the power to decide what will be morally right and what will be morally wrong.” 2 As Christians it is vital to follow the teachings of God and see everything of the world through a biblical filter. The Bible tells us in John that children of God are set apart and so called to glorify Jesus and not be of this world. “They do not belong to this world any more than I do.” 3 It is for this reason that one’s personal methodology of ethics is based off Revelational Christian Ethics and Divine Command Theory. Revelational Christian Ethics Diving deeper into Revelational Christian Ethics it is clear that this theory rest solely on the evidence that God exist. This theory is embedded deeply into the Christian faith. Within this theory God is in control. God’s word tells us whether an action is right or wrong. John Frame, 1 Jones, Michael Scott. the author of The Doctrine of the Christian Life stated it this way, “…because he is present with us, he is able to serve as a moral example: “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Lev. 19:2; cf. Matt. 5:48). 4 When morality is put in this terminology it seems so simple that even a child could understand it. “God is good, so I should be good.” The Bible is very black and white when it comes to sinful behavior, therefore there is little to question when it comes to morality. The best explanation to consider is that God being omnipotent, knew that humanity would have great struggles and he gave us the gift of his word, a blueprint to guide us through the obstacles of this life. His word is many things, it is our hope, our salvation, why would it not
