CNST 361 1-22-08 Chapter 4 - Bar Charts When schedules are associated with construction projects the typical format will be a bar chart. Presenting schedule information allows the creator of the schedule to: Adjust a very simple checklist or to-do list (tabular representation) and pair it alongside timed bars (graphical representation). Incorporate critical path method (CPM) scheduling techniques for more complex projects. A synonymous term for a bar chart is the Gantt Chart, named for Henry Gantt’s extensive use of bar chart scheduling during WWI What separates a bar chart from identifying activities in a list is the representation of the work along a timeline. The specific activities take-up space along the timeline and allow the schedule creator and end-users to see the relationships between activities and proposed timing of work. There are many ways to display the timeline associated with a bar chart: Calendar Days - any combination of year/ quarter/ month/ week/ day. Some project
